Governor Clinton?

That’s what some unnamed “Democratic Party insiders” are floating as a “consolation prize” that might convince Hillary Clinton to drop her presidential aspirations, according to Jonathan Alter in Newsweek.

Joe Gandelman aptly remarks that the story’s legitimacy depends on its provenance:

The key to this story is: who sourced it? Did it come from someone sympathetic to the Clinton campaign or a Clinton associate? Or did it come from someone close to the Obama campaign, or Democrats who never really liked Clinton and want her out now ASAP both due the political train-wreck-in-Denver scenario that seems closer every day and the fact that they never really supported her anyway?

It’s not a small question. Because if the story is based on sources that didn’t like Clinton, then it should also be seen as part and parcel of the ongoing attempt to have her quit the race early. For the early part of the campaign the motif was Clinton’s “inevitability.” In this phase, in many quarters, it’s Obama’s “inevitability.”

Hmmm, wonder if Patrick Leahy is one of those “Democratic insiders”?

Memo to Ralph Nader: It’s not about whether it’s Clinton’s right to run; it’s whether Clinton is right to run at this point. Is she doing the right thing for the Democratic Party and for the country as a whole? Is she doing the right thing for herself when it comes right down to it.

And since we all know this latest piece of self-indulgent crap is really about you, and not about Clinton, let me just add that all of the above applies to the Nader/Gonzalez ‘08 campaign.
