Pass The Bill
The bill in the Senate, while far from perfect, even not real acceptable, is as good as we are going to get in 2009. Politics, “the art of the possible,” makes this the best possible bill we can get for right now.
Greg Sargent has this post up.
This bill, as it stands today will accomplish two very important things:
- It will improve the lives of many millions of our fellow citizens. And I mean many more than just the 30 or so million who will be able to get insurance that do not have it now. I am talking about those that have to pay an arm and a leg for a pre-existing condition and those that might exceed some spending cap.
- This will appear as a victory for President Obama. The Senator from South Carolina vowed that a defeat of health care would be Obama’s Waterloo. This is a must win if progressives have any hope of future victories/progress in 2010.
This bill after it goes through conference and after Obama signs it will most likely be better. Stupak’s amendment will be history. And future Congresses will improve on it.
You can bet on that.
