Duke Power Co. and its’ wholly-owned subsidiary refused to sign a union contract with the U.M.W.A. in 1973 at the Brookside mine in Harlan, KY.
The strike lasted thirteen months, with many miners and miner’s wives receiving sixty day jail sentences for impeding scabs on their way to work, ending with a contract shortly after a miner was killed by a shotgun blast to the head.
