Would it be going too far to suggest that there is another reason why SecDef Gates was upset that the picture was distributed by AP.  This, from RawStory, criticism by Secretary Gates may be because the Secretary knows that a few pictures of dead, dying or maimed soldiers will sour the American public faster than newsprint of a defeat.

Forty plus years ago it was the pictures from South Viet Nam that fueled the war protest movement.  Since then all administrations have gone to great lengths to keep pictures of wounded service people out of the public domain.
