We Need A Different Tac

It seems, to me, as if the Dems/Progressives want to play by some set of  “civil/gentlemanly” rules when it come to national issues.

And

It seems, again, to me, that the Repubs simply want to win – at any cost.

Go back to the Florida re-count in 2000.  We were led to believe that all those men pushing to get through the locked, glass-paneled doors were just your average citizen that wanted to see a definitive result.

The “Brooks Brothers riot” of November 2000, which has been billed as a “spontaneous grassroots uprising”, has been cited as an example of astroturfing by US Republican Party operatives.  We weren’t informed until years later that they were Republican operative, staff members of elected Republican officials. including members of Congress.

From Wiki:

“They stole our name. They stole our logo. They created a position title and made up the name of someone to fill it. They forged a letter and sent it to our congressman without our authorization,” said Tim Freilich, who sits on the executive committee of Creciendo Juntos, a nonprofit network that tackles issues related to Charlottesville’s Hispanic community.

So, we’ve looked at a sample of Repub backed supposed grass-roots, citizen-activists that were really astro-turf, professional agitators that were paid by Freedom Works or API or any one of a dozen or so uber-conservative groups.

And, the Dems still, in September of 2010, have not learned a thing.  The Dems still want to play nice.  Obama and his advisors either were not prepared for the complete and totally disciplined Repub resistance to any program the Dems put forward OR, and I say this with some disbelief, they thought they could make the Repubs play fair.

It is long past time to employ the same “win-at-any-cost” strategy.  If we don’t fight fire with fire, come November, we are going to be steam-rolled by the Repubs and the “Tan Man” will be the new Speaker.

The Dems need some “astro-turf” uprisings that the media will show on the nightly news.  How about a protest of the auctioning off of a foreclosed home of a 70-something Grand Ma? Or the moving of a factory to Thailand with the resultant loss of 700 jobs.  Or a protest of people dying due to a lack of health care.

Some of these ideas may be repugnant to some.  But there are some smart Dem strategists who could put together some form of popular protest in October, just before the elections.

We need to fight fire with, if not fire, then the same determination to win, to absolutely crush the opposition.  Because if we do not have that determination, the Repubs will crush us and the US we’ve grown up with.
