Travel Broadens – Not A New Concept

On the Melissa Harris-Perry show on MSNBC, a guest, Janny Scott made a very interesting statement regarding Barack Obama and his mother, regarding both of them having lived in New Guinea.

The world was a much more familiar place to them, than to many Americans.

Mrs. Chief and I have each live in two foreign countries.  She lived in one country twice, one as a teen and once after we had three children.

Which is why I find the statement a little more profound than others might find it.

Both of us look at the world a whole lot differently than your average seventy-plus retired person.  And I think that Ms. Scott nailed it.  We have lived overseas.  We have been able to see our country at arms-length.  We have been able to compare it to our host country.  We can see the positives of our country and we can also see the short comings.
