In the 1970s, I spent three years as a Navy recruiter. During that time I helped a lot of young people gain a productive future by enlisting in the Navy.
After reading this story, several things come to mind.
One day, I had a young lady come into the office. She was what we called “prior service.” She had spent four years in the U.S. Air Force. She was successful in joining the Navy and one of her duty assignments was in Rota, Spain.
After having been in the Navy for awhile she stopped by the recruiting office to chat. One of the things that stuck with me was her saying how the male sailors that she was stationed with were much politer and less sexually suggestive than her male USAF counter parts were.
In 35 years, apparently nothing has changed.
