Little Rock 9
Today is the 55th anniversary of a seminal event in American life
On September 25, 1957, the nine black students entered the school under the protection of 1,000 members of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army.
The Little Rock Nine were a group of African-American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. The ensuing Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus, and then attended after the intervention of President Eisenhower, is considered to be one of the most important events in the African-American Civil Rights Movement
Here is a link to a site that gives a short bio of each of the 9. It is dated 1997 so I do not know if it has been updated since then.
The Ol’ Chief was a 16 year old high school senior in Massachusetts when these events took place. I have no personal recollection of the Little Rock 9. I do recall the news of Gov. Faubus et al.
Today, I can appreciate the tremendous courage that each of those nine students had to have possessed to endure the entering and the whole year at Central High.
