Sen. Thune, Kindergarten Teacher

This is what some Senate Republicans think of Americans’ time and intelligence while they’re struggling to make ends meet in the worst global economic crisis since the Great Depression:

Via Josh Marshall, who quotes a Hill staffer’s reaction:

Putting aside how superficial the argument is, Thune’s visual aid is really a fascinating example of how little Republicans in the Senate actually understand “regular folks.” They think they need a visual aid so that people realize ONE TRILLION DOLLARS is a lot of money. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t think that’s a lot of money.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are trying to block a Democratic proposal to add $25 billion to the stimulus package “for highways, mass transit, and water projects. …” But wait! They’re not trying to block it:

… Republicans said their goal was to change the bill, not to block it. “Nobody that I know of is trying to keep a package from passing,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that one up for us, Mitch.
