Guns

I initially posted this as a comment here:

President Obama does not have to face re-election and has four years (two different Congresses, we have a mid-term in 2014) to get some legislation re: guns passed. It doesn’t take any reading between the lines to understand what he is talking about. And if this current Congress cannot get meaningful gun legislation passed, the Dems can campaign heavily against the stubborn Repubs.

Personally, I feel that the NRA is a terrorist organization. No one needs any gun that can fire more than one bullet at a time. So, revolvers are OK, bolt action rifles are OK, single and double-barrel shotguns are OK. Guns used for hunting ate OK. Semi-automatic, fully automatic, any guns on wheels are absolutely prohibited.

I cannot think of a more opportune time to not only have a “national conversation” about guns, but to actually push back very hard against the NRA and other assorted gun nuts.

Guns are necessary in our society because no wants to see a starving “Bambi” wandering down Main Street.  And the deer population is growing in the mid-west and south.

Hunting not only provides income to the individual states, it, also, keeps the deer, turkey and varmint population in check.

Having said that, no sportsman or hunter goes hunting with a fully automatic assault rifle.  A bolt action,  1898 Mauser, .30 – 06 would be my gun of choice if I was hunting in a state where rifles were allowed  (Ohio only allows shotguns).

Many hunters carry a side arm (pistol) in order to put a wounded animal out of its misery.  I never carried a side arm and have not owned a gun of any kind since 1969.  I see no need to own a gun of any sort.
