Cindy McCain Offended By Attacks on Her Wealth

Apparently, she doesn’t think it’s relevant that her husband is so clueless about his privileged economic status that he doesn’t know how many homes he owns:

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos reports: Democrats’ attacks on her family’s wealth are unfair and offensive, Cindy McCain said today in an interview airing tomorrow on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

“I’m offended by Barack Obama saying that about my husband,” said McCain’s wife Cindy.
When asked if Obama went too far in his criticism of McCain, Cindy responded, “I do. I do. I really do.”

McCain also said beer the distributorship her father built, which is the source of much her family’s wealth, typifies the American Dream.

“My father had nothing. He and my mother sold everything they had to raise $10,000,” she said. “I’m proud of what my dad and my mother did and what they built and left me. And I intend to carry their legacy as long as I can.”

The Obama campaign’s response: Tough nuggies, baby:

“The fact that John McCain does not know how many houses he owns when millions are struggling to stay in the only house they have shows he’s out of touch with the lives of real Americans,” said Obama spokeswoman Linda Douglass Saturday afternoon. “McCain is promising to double down on the economic policies of George W. Bush which have benefited corporations and CEO’s while leaving middle-class families behind. John McCain just doesn’t get it.”

Two additional points:

First, those 8 or 9 or 10 or 11 homes that the McCains own are all mortgage-free. Not because the mortgages are paid off; they never had any mortgages. They paid for their homes — all of them — in cash. Think about that for a minute. I suppose it’s possible that a presidential candidate who is so wealthy that he can buy eight or more homes outright might still be able to understand what it feels like to have a 15- or a 30-year mortgage that you struggle to pay every month, with millions of Americans losing their homes because they cannot do that — but John McCain is not that candidate.

And second, lots of Americans also start out with nothing — sometimes not even the $10,000 Cindy McCain’s parents raised by selling all the nothing they had. And those Americans work every bit as hard as Cindy McCain’s father did. The “American Dream” that Cindy McCain says her parents’ economic success “typifies” is out of reach for most Americans today. And even if her parents’ story does typify the American Dream, her story and her husband’s story do not. Most of us have neither a rich daddy to inherit millions from, nor a wealthy husband or wife to give us a third-hand claim (Cindy’s claim is second-hand; John’s is third-hand) to the American Dream. And that’s the point. John McCain did not earn his unimaginable wealth. He didn’t even inherit it. He married into it.

That offends ME.
